Sofia, an anthropology student, finds her life centered around caring for her ailing mother. Hoping to improve her condition and find an effective treatment, she takes her to the Spanish seaside town of Almeria. While Rose undergoes treatment at the clinic of the enigmatic healer Dr. Gomez, Sofia spends the sweltering summer days getting to know the town's inhabitants.
