Five-year-old Sosuke lives with his mother by the sea. One day, the boy finds a bottle with a goldfish trapped inside it on the beach. Sosuke saves her and names her Ponyo. It soon turns out that Ponyo is no ordinary fish. She is the daughter of a great magician and a sea goddess. One day, the fish, with the help of a magic spell, turns into a little girl. She and Sosuke quickly become a pair of inseparable friends. Unfortunately, this magical transformation disturbs the balance of nature. The father-magician sends ocean waves to search for his daughter, the Moon is dangerously close to the Earth. The children bravely try to prevent a catastrophe, and at the same time fulfill Ponyo's dreams of being human.
